How to carve a pumpkin with a stencil

  1. Print the stencil at 100%. Choose “Actual size” in the print dialog, not “Fit to page”. Shrink it for a small pumpkin.
  2. Open and scoop the pumpkin. Cut the lid at an angle so it does not fall in, then scrape the inside of the face wall until it is about 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick. Thinner walls are easier to cut.
  3. Tape the stencil on. Snip a few slits around the edge of the paper so it lies flat on the curve, then tape it down.
  4. Transfer the outline. Poke holes along the edge of every black shape with a push pin or poking tool, a few millimetres apart. Peel the paper off; rubbing a little flour over the pumpkin makes the dots easier to see.
  5. Carve the black shapes. Use a small serrated carving saw and cut straight in, starting with the shapes in the middle and working outward. Push each piece out from the inside.
  6. Light it safely. An LED tea light or battery candle is safer than a flame, especially near costumes and dry leaves.

Safety tips

  • An adult should do the cutting. Children can scoop, poke the dots and pick the design.
  • Carve on a dry, steady surface and keep your free hand away from the path of the saw.
  • The thin parts (spider legs, star points, fangs) break easily, so cut them slowly and last.

Make your own stencil from a photo

Want a pet, a name or a favourite shape instead? The free stencil generator turns a photo into a high-contrast black-and-white stencil in your browser, with nothing uploaded. Pick a photo with one clear subject, raise the simplify slider to smooth small specks, and check that no white part is completely surrounded by black before you carve.

Frequently asked questions

Are these pumpkin carving stencils free?

Yes. Every stencil on this page is a free PDF and SVG download, with no signup and no email address required.

What size should I print a pumpkin stencil?

Print the PDF at 100% (actual size) for a medium or large pumpkin; most designs are 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) wide. For a small pumpkin, lower the scale in your print dialog, for example to 70%. The letter-size PDF also prints on A4 without cutting off the design.

Which stencil is easiest for kids?

The happy face, the ghost face and the moon and stars have a few large, separate shapes, so they are the simplest to carve. Let children poke the dots and scoop the pumpkin while an adult does the cutting.

Can I cut these stencils with a Cricut or laser cutter?

Yes. Each SVG file contains only the vector cut shapes (no background or labels), so you can import it into Cricut Design Space or laser software to cut a reusable stencil from cardstock or stencil film.

Can I turn my own photo into a pumpkin stencil?

Yes. The free EpicPxls stencil generator turns a photo into a black-and-white printable stencil in your browser. Simple, high-contrast photos with one subject work best for carving.
